May's Clouds

May's Clouds  is an oil painting, 5 x 7 inches.  The work was inspired by a photograph taken by my artist friend, May, in 2008.  That summer she took many photographs of Martha's Vineyard, an island she had grown to love.  We agreed that I would paint the scenes she had captured digitally.  May thought it would be fun to see two interpretations through two different mediums of the same subject at the same time of day.

The painting  is of a section of Squibnocket Beach, a strip of land that can change from soft light colored sand to deep and endless undulating dunes of smooth, flat rocks.  I visited the spot where May had taken the picture.  It had been rocky for her and was indeed all rock when I surveyed the beach.  I painted the work true to May's composition but interpreted the moment as a painter.

  1. I feel like I'm on island when I look at this peaceful image of the summer sky!
