La Jolla Festival of the Arts Part ll

The La Jolla Festival of the Arts, 2012, was a delight.  Many fine artists participated and we were pleased to show our work among them.  Sadly no sales.  We did make many contacts and spoke with several potential clients.  Our work showed nicely.  By combining our booth spaces under one twenty foot canopy, Kim and I had an open and easy space to work within.  The La Jolla Festival organizers added three feet to the front of every booth making it possible to bring our panels outside of the tent perimeter.

La Jolla Arts Festival June 23 & 24

The paintings have been shipped!  Eleven canvases are on their way to Malibu.  Sis and I will drive to the La Jolla Arts Festival running June 23 and 24.  We'll have a very full car carrying my paintings, her photography works, display panels, lights and my fantastic nieces.

MORE TO COME

The above painting, Morning Light, has just sold.  It is one of my favorite works.  I struggled to keep the colors cool and reflective of light on the beach at an early hour.  I am so pleased that my new friends in Texas enjoy the subtlety of this piece.  Artists I admire tell me they like this painting, a combination of reality and abstraction working to create a feel for the scene.

Thank you Kim and Doug for the purchase and thank you for sharing your son for the summer.  Justin is a catcher on the summer collegiate team the Sharks of Martha's Vineyard.  He and another teammate, Jip, will live with us for the season.

MV Up-Island Plein Air Art Show

Martha's Vineyard first plein-air art show of the 2012 season opened at Bananas Gallery & the Kanta Lipsky Studio on Memorial Day Weekend.  The opening reception was a success with a huge crowd, great food and wine and jazz piano played by Adam Lipsky.

The seven participating artists were Marjorie Mason, Thaw Malin, Brendon Newton, Liz Taft, Kate Taylor, Kanta Lipsky and Valentine...that's me.  The two week show was created by Kanta and me.  We were thrilled by the enthusiasm and support of each of the artists we invited to participate.

The artists were to submit three paintings to the show all of which had to be plein air works or paintings created in-studio from plein air studies.  One of each artist's work had to be  created on site at the Jeffrey Levy-Hinte property, directly across State Road from the Bananas Gallery.  The artists greatly appreciated the invite from the Levy-Hinte family to paint from wherever we pleased within the eight acre property.  The results were wonderful.  We had access to the property from May 1 - May 2oth.  Much of that time on the island was windy, wet and stormy.  Kate Taylor, Liz Taft and I found a window of beautiful sunlit weather in early May.  We each painted for one and a half or two hours.  I painted a large canvas, 30x30, which is large for a plein air work which must be completed before the light changes drastically.  To accomplish this I mixed my palette ahead of time, worked with a palate knife and quick drying oil medium.  The result, 'Far Meadow', is the above image.
